Angostura bitters is a concentrated bitter based on gentian, herbs and spices, by the House of Angostura in Trinidad and Tobago. 

These legendary bitters are a slightly reddish, brown colour – and generally give most drinks a pink tinge. It was created by Dr Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, who was Surgeon General in Simon Bolivar’s army in Venezuela. The drink was originally created for use as medicine but survives to this day due to its wonderful richness and complexity that adds a great “extra dimension” to a drink.

Angostura bitters is a unique flavour enhancer, and not just in alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. It can also be used to enhance flavours in many savoury or sweet food dishes.

The smell is uniquely aromatic, with a blend of herbs, fruits and spices. Taste-wise, it is strongly aromatic with a bouquet of fruits, spices and herbs. Generally, just a few dashes are all that’s needed.

Angostura bitters uses the same original secret recipe since 1824. Angostura aromatic bitters remain the quintessential and definitive ingredient for classic and contemporary cocktails.
